Malaysia aims to humanise APEC 2020

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ Summit which Malaysia will be hosting in 2020, the second time the country hosts an APEC summit following the one in 1998, aims to humanise APEC to the public.

International Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI) deputy secretary-general (Industry) Datuk K Talagavathi said the event that will kick-off this December will bring over 16,000 delegates from 20 other economies of the globe.

“We would like to inform the public that APEC is not just about meetings but rather, it is about bringing people together and see how we all can collaborate towards a better tomorrow,” she said during a briefing on preparations for the hosting of the APEC 2020 summit to foreign missions and hotels attended by Bernama on Wednesday (July 17).

Talagavathi represented MITI secretary-general Datuk Lokman Hakim Ali.

MITI is the national secretariat for APEC 2020.

APEC 2020 will comprise 120 meetings across six cities throughout the country namely Langkawi, Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Melaka and Kota Kinabalu.

“As Malaysia is also a founding member, the hosting of this event is a proud achievement as we will have the same prime minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to host and chair the APEC twice,” she added. โ€“ BERNAMA
