Razorpay Curlec partners with NPCI International to launch UPI Payments in Malaysia

In a pioneering move set to enhance Malaysia’s position as a leading destination for Indian tourists, Razorpay Curlec has joined forces with NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) to introduce India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) to Malaysia.

The historic partnership, officially announced at India’s Global Fintech Fest 2025, aims to provide Malaysian businesses with the capability to accept instant payments from millions of Indian travellers through UPI-enabled apps. This development represents a significant leap towards the seamless integration of cross-border commerce between the two countries.

Malaysia witnessed a remarkable growth in Indian tourism in 2024, with one million visitors from India contributing RM 6.11 billion to the local economy – a 71.7% increase compared to the previous year. This growing influx of Indian tourists presents an ideal opportunity to streamline payment processes and provide enhanced convenience for both Indian travellers and Malaysian merchants.

Under this collaboration, Indian tourists can now make payments directly to Malaysian merchants using UPI-enabled apps, without the need for international cards or complex integrations. The payments will be settled in Malaysian ringgit through Razorpay Curlec’s platform, ensuring both speed and simplicity.

Kevin Lee, Country Head and CEO of Razorpay Curlec, expressed his excitement about the launch, stating, “Indian travellers are one of the fastest-growing groups visiting Malaysia. However, many still rely on cash or incur high fees when using international cards.

“By enabling UPI payments, we are not only making it easier for Indian visitors to spend but also supporting Malaysian businesses in growing their customer base. This partnership is a key step in fostering frictionless payments and strengthening Malaysia’s position as a digital economy leader,” he said.

The integration of UPI with Malaysia’s burgeoning digital economy marks a new chapter in cross-border commerce. This partnership is expected to promote financial inclusion, enhance business opportunities, and provide a more efficient and user-friendly payment solution for both merchants and consumers.

As both nations continue to nurture their economic ties, the introduction of UPI payments is expected to fuel further growth in tourism and business exchanges between Malaysia and India.
