Sarawak is set to export 30 megawatt (MW) of electricity to Sabah for 15 years beginning end-2023 via a 31 km 275 kV double circuit transmission line which will run from Lawas in northern Sarawak to Mengalong in Sabah.
This will mark a historical milestone in the journey towards materialising the Borneo Grid and the wider Asean Power Grid and an agreement has been signed towards this between Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) and Syarikat SESCO Bhd.
The interconnection is expected to commence by end-2023 once the grid expansion under Sarawak Energy’s Northern Agenda has connected Miri to the northern towns of Limbang and Lawas in Sarawak.
This interconnection project is expected to diversify the generation mix for Sabah and Sarawak while enhancing system reliability and security by sharing generation resources for both Sarawak Energy and Sabah Electricity.
In 2016, Sarawak began to export electricity to West Kalimantan through a 120km 275 kV double circuit transmission line stretching from Mambong in southern Sarawak to Bengkayang in West Kalimantan.
